Keiko is THE MAN, and one who knows what he wants! Not quite tall buildings at a single bound, but if there’s something 3 feet high that he wants? Gone! And if it’s not jumpable, then beware of the bully bulldozer. Because of this tendency to run over things, a home with young kids would not work well.
Actually, Keiko is a loving, funny, and active 2-year-old youngster who loves toys, food and his humans, in that order. Did we say toys? Yep, he loves toys, all toys, and more toys and can get a little possessive over them. This is where a strong owner-leader comes in. He definitely needs someone who can handle a loving, but stubborn EBD.
Keiko is potty-trained and really loves to walk on a leash. He is fine with other dogs, as there are quite a few in his foster home. Crate trained? Well, we will say yes, but let’s add that it’s not his favorite place and he does voice his opinion quite strongly about it. He also knows a few commands. Sit is a good one and the other, says his foster Mom, “Keiko, leave that alone and get off the dining room table.”
Keiko came into rescue because he couldn’t keep any food down, so his owner surrendered him. To fix his issues, (thanks to his Snortporters), Keiko had his nares widened, his palate shortened and sialocele removed. Since he just had this major surgery on his upper airway he will need to be closely monitored. Thankfully he is now is eating normally - but this will need to be closely watched by his new family.
To describe Keiko’s ideal home would be to say it’s with a single person, a younger couple, family with older kids, home with other dogs, owner experience with dogs, especially short-nosed dogs. He would do well in the city, suburbs, country and in a single-family house. Close living quarters – such as an apartment – would not be ideal because of his tendency to howl, whine and throw tantrums at times.
Always, foster Moms have the last word when it comes to their charges:
I would like to see Keiko with an engaged family or a single person. He really would like to be able to go to work with you or have you at home. Keiko is at the age when he will test boundaries a lot. He needs a strong leader to help him grow up to be a well-adjusted bully. Keiko is a busy boy, but once you settle down he is more than happy to snuggle with you.
