Truly a bright light in everyone's day, Lumiere the special needs French Bulldog is sure to put a smile on your face. This young man views all obstacles in his path as new challenges ready to be conquered. Lumiere, or "Lume" as his friends call him, was named after the French accented character in Beauty and the Beast, because after all...he is a French Bulldog! This handsome brindle man is approximately 5 years old and weighs 28 pounds.
Lumiere entered S.N.O.R.T. by way of a shelter. This special mister has Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) which resulted in hind leg paralysis. Instead of succumbing to an inactive lifestyle, Lume prefers to strap on his wheels and tackle the great outdoors. He enjoys suburban walks or roaming the yard using his wheelie cart. In August, Lumiere and his foster canines attended the official "Pug Camp" in western PA where he participated and placed very well in pug camp races with his foster mama's encouragement. Not camera shy, he insisted on attaching his pug race video for your enjoyment, and already has his sights set on becoming a camp counselor when he grows up. Lumiere loves to play with his foster companions and enjoys the company of both dogs and cats. He can be a bit mouthy when taking treats, and will tackle you when playing, so adults or children over 13 are perfect playmates for this muscle man.
Estimated to be 5 years old or possibly younger, Lume has a lot of living yet to do and the zest to do it -- with your guidance. His foster mama refers to him as a silly and happy love bug. He enjoys wrestling with the other dogs in his foster home. He would enjoy a household with someone around most of the day so that he can get the companionship and attention he deserves. Lumiere takes some medications that will need to be adhered to in his forever home. He is prescribed Gabapentin (twice daily) for pain and does have some sensitivity to pain in the area of his injury. As a fitness enthusiast and outdoorsman, Lume has committed to developing his front leg strength for future Pug Camp competitions and thus began a supplement regime including: Glycloflex, Verti Disc and Super Snouts joint support. Lumiere is currently on antibiotics for a bladder infection and can benefit from cranberry treats to aid in prevention of future infections. He is neutered, microchipped and up to date on vaccines.
The ideal environment for Lumiere would consist of someone who will love him for who he is and embrace his disability. Due to his paralysis, one floor living and/or ramps are needed. He would thrive in a suburban area where he has room to maneuver with his cart. According to his foster mama, he has a lot of energy for a wheelie dog. Due to his disability, Lume is incontinent and needs to be diapered and have his bladder expressed. His foster mama has this to say about Lume: "He has a big personality and shows that a dog can live life to the fullest even with being in a wheelchair. He has a wonderful quality of life. Do not let the wheels and diapers scare you! He is an amazing friend and companion."
